James Bond vs 007 – a review (of sorts)

This post is not packed with spoilers but there’s an overall spoiler vibe. So if you’re one of those people who hate spoilers, you have been warned.

Let me just start by saying I think this is a perfect movie. I LOVED it! The writers have done a smashing job including my fave Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And of course, Daniel Craig is the James Bond for me now. I love Connery, but Craig brought a rawness to the role that we haven’t seen before.

Okay… spoilers coming….

This is an important distinction to make – There is a difference between James Bond and the title 007. James Bond is a spy with the Double-O Section, a fictitious ultra-covert unit within the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS/MI6). If you remember, Sean Bean played a duplicitous former-006 who got his comeuppance in Goldeneye. There were others, both written by Ian Fleming and subsequent authors; 001 right up to 0013, but none have the same ring as 007 if you ask me.

Depending on how you consume your Bond, his origin story is slightly different, but the result was the same. Bond’s “00” status is confirmed by his “completion” of a job, i.e. he dispatches a couple of enemies of the state and Commander James Bond earns his License to Kill along with the title 007. In one of the books, he earns that status after another unnamed agent, who just happens to be 007, meets his maker.

So remember this when you watch the latest instalment and ponder who might slip on the tuxedo as the new James Bond because the answer is almost definitely no one.

But we may see a reboot of the “00 Section” in the near future!

While we’re on the subject of James Bond, here is a stunning video for your listening and viewing pleasure of the amazing Raw Deep. My son has just recently joined the band. He’s the one with the glorious moustache. You can find the band on Facebook and Instagram.
