A room of one’s own

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”

Virginia Woolf ~ A Room of One’s Own

A room and some money. Not too much to ask for, surely?

I have a day job so the money is covered but what I crave, what I NEED is a Room of One’s Own, and by one, I mean me. At the moment I write in the corner of the living room. First world struggle is real, I know, but, oh boy am I looking forward to a day when I might have a little nook, an alcove, to call my own. It must have a DOOR and said door must have a lock (on the inside!) and a cat flap!

I do get a lot of uninterrupted time at home to write so I really should NOT BE COMPLAINING!

Speaking of writing…. Alas, I’ve abandoned my Nanowrimo2020 project already. With a working title of Homecoming it ticked the box for a story set in Australia but I just wasn’t feeling it. I must say, the Pinterest board is looking smashing but the story… hey, I’ll keep it in the figurative bottom draw – it’s 8000+words and it’s an okay story, I’m just not in love with it. And when you’re doing this for love…well you have to be passionate about the product!

Perhaps I needed some feedback on it. If I am going to write (that story) to market somewhat I really need to get some opinions on the story thus far before I sink any more time into it. I’m a big believer in feedback and in this case the only failure would be to keep banging away at it when I could be working on something else. I’ll clean up the copy and post it here at some stage.

So it’s back to Circle of Ashes for me and yes, I’m excited. I think readers can tell when the author is interested in the story but at the end of the day I write for enjoyment, because it fascinates me and because I am a massive nerd who loves research, history and stories.

Of course I have a dream that I will one day be a successful writer (as in I’ll make some money from it!) and it is through the little steps, the daily action, 100 words here and 500 words there, in my little corner of the living room, that I will get there and perhaps one day justify my future nook with door!

What have you done today to make you feel proud – Stevie channelling her inner Heather Small. Please – someone – anyone… if you get this joke, let me know 😉
