When I got home from France in November I couldn’t update my phone. It was too full. I take a lot of photos but seriously, I took 12,000 photos while I was away.
I don’t like spending time looking at my phone while I’m on holidays and I don’t post that much on social media. I have had a camera since I was eight years old and I love taking photos so I need a system. I need to start curating my photos.

Using a smart phone takes away the importance of getting the right shot which is great but it makes us snap whores too.

These days I just click click click away without thinking and two minutes later I’ve snapped 50 shots of the same thing. Even when that thing happens to be the Eiffel Tower or some other amazing monument or view-really-it’s still too many.
It took me a week to download my photos to an external hard drive via my laptop. I didn’t want to dump them in the hundreds of files the phone generated so I needed to group the images by country or area then delete the double ups and the dozens of screenshots.

My new system is a two pronged approach of being mindful while taking photos and curating them daily. I keep the best shot if I’ve taken multiple and post some in my Instagram stories then delete. I send favourites to my Frameo digital frame. If I’ve taken a photo of a book that I would like to read, I’ll add it to my Books to Read note on my phone. And if I have taken a screenshot of some amazing quote, I’ll either share that then delete or email it to myself.
It’s not a perfect system, but it’s a start.
Here are some of my favourite quotes of the past year.

Here are some of the books I’ve met on my travels.

Have a great day. I’m off to delete some more photos.
