Family and Community is everything.

You get some great, amazingly fantastic news. What’s the first thing you do?

I got some great news a few days ago. Rikki from Hawkeye Publishing, a growing independent publisher based in Brisbane Australia, called to let me know my manuscript had long listed in their manuscript development prize. I was so thrilled.

The first thing I did was tell my husband. He’s the first person I talk to when I have news, good and not so good.

At the time we were on a shuttle bus at Narita airport in Japan so the next day I emailed my dad to tell him. He had read this manuscript in its original state when it needed a lot of work. This story has been part of my life since 2021 and is the subject of a series of posts called Story of a Story.

Once I had sent the full manuscript off to Hawkeye, I told my little writing group, my trusted friends and colleagues some of whom had read the story and given me essential feedback.

I love my writing community, especially my little critique group. They’re supportive and caring regardless of the news.

I couldn’t imagine trying to “make it” as a writer without them and they are the first to know when I get news.
