I have this bad habit of reading at least 3 books at a time unless one really grabs my attention and demands fealty.
Stephen King’s On Writing has grabbed me by the scruff of my neck right now. It’s an easy read but I feel smarter already and I am only halfway through. His personal story is interesting and writing is his trade and his fortune, so he knows a thing or two.
My mother gave me a copy of Virginia Woolfe’s A Room of One’s Own for my birthday. Can you see a pattern forming here? I’m actively studying how to make my writing better. (But I’m pretty sure that’s one of the worst sentences I’ve ever written!)
I really neglected reading the classics when I was young so I’m trying to make up for it now. I’m also reading Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway which is interesting, and The Day of the Triffids, a gift from my sister.
My reading list also includes a couple of ebooks by people I have met online. I sometimes struggle with these because they are rarely in my preferred genres but I’ll give them a go.
Here’s a list of some of my favourite books. You might want to check them out. I majored in Children’s literacy so there are some kids books here.
Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce is one of my all-time favourite books. Apparently, there is a movie now, too!
From the trailer it looks very low-budget, but I’ll definitely be watching this soon!
Fahrenheit451 byRayBradbury(a movie of this amazing book is coming out soon too. It’s incredible how many of these dystopian-future stories have enjoyed a surge in popularity. Might have something to do with their almost prophetic storylines…)
Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. As a teenager, I thought the ending was lame. Now I know better. I was the lame one.
Life after Life by Kate Atkinson. This book changed my life by inspiring me to get my own novel finished.
The Pigman by Paul Zindel. I stayed up all night reading this. I need to read it again to see whether it’s still good…
