I’m gonna be sore tomorrow.

After more than 20 years I went to a tap class tonight. I think I’d decided that it was either that or the gym and I couldn’t face paying someone to yell at me in a room full of sweaty people.

It was great. Somehow i could still do grab-offs but I’d forgotten how to brush step, brush step, brush step, shuffle, brush step, etc. My left and right hemispheres were at war.

The suburb has changed but the room still looks the same. Some of the board-mount posters were still on the wall (The Moulin Rouge, Phantom of the Opera, Todd McKenny in Singing in the Rain. His mum was my teacher back then.)

It felt like 1997; they were still playing Michael Jackson… oh if I could be that young again…

Just being there made me remember all the older ladies I danced with then. They were all in their 60s, 70s and even 80s. Some had danced in Paris and NYC. One had been a showgirl in Vegas. Tap dancing kept them mobile, I remember them saying, and I looked at their slim, toned legs and vowed I’d dance for the rest of my life.

I’m renewing that vow. I just hope I’m not too sore tomorrow.
