David Rudolf is a public defender. He’s been working in the criminal justice system in the US for 44 years. (See him in the Netflix true crime series The Staircase). Rather than seeing himself as defending people who may or may not have committed a crime, he sees himself as a helping those who are at their lowest point. Semantics aside, he does a job that few people could do; helping those who society is preparing to punish.

In a recent interview with Russell Brand, he said that as he nears the end of his career in criminal justice, he is looking at the social justice arena for a new direction. He was in the UK speaking to groups about The Staircase and other justice issues. When Russell asked what he hoped to achieve from his speaking tour, he stumbled on his words. This erudite and eloquent man had trouble saying he wanted to inspire people to go out and ‘be ripples from the stone he had thrown’.

Why do people struggle to say they want to inspire positive qualities in others? What’s wrong with that? I mean, deadshits and despots aren’t afraid to say they want to inspire people. I want to inspire people to create meaning in their lives, to aim for health and wellness, in body, mind and spirit, to fully embrace life and to be kind to others while they’re at it. And I want to surround myself with people who inspire me to do the same.

Loving The History Chicks as I prepare to write two strong female characters for Nanowrimo. One is a modern woman who doesn’t know how strong she really is, and the other is a Druid acolyte who knows herself to the bone.

Lots of Preparation for Nanowrimo!

Omg I’ve got goosebumps I didn’t realise my link was there… lol
I was thinking about your source of inspiration for your story?? Because… Omg… you’re an author! Which is the best!
I was also thinking about the names of your 3 friends… and because I like to construct my own reality, I have sooooo much symbolism and interpretations for you right now about that shit!!! Haha.

I’m reading your posts and half the time I’m like Yes! And the other half I’m like what? I love it!
I really don’t know where the ideas come from. I mean, my first novel is pretty obvious for anyone who knows me. My second is like wtf? This one has come outta the blue.
I do wonder what the Kates mean…. any interpretations welcome 🤔

Ok. So this is super dooper quick as I’ve just been asked to cook dinner and if I don’t write this I’ll forget about it.
Your story sounds like my search for Sara. I’m the modern and she’s the druid… and the names. The goddess Hecate – The tripartite goddess, maiden mother crone, or any 3 entity (3 fates, holy trinity, heaven earth hell, etc).
My personal philosophy or understanding of perfection in existence… when 3 moves to 4. All 4 of you have the same consonant sound at the start of your names. However in every grouo nof 4 there is usually the single “other” who doesn’t quite fit in. This would be you with the “Chr” as opposed to their “ka”. I adore symbolism of names and literal language in it’s liminal… linear form. I like to study the literal and figurative letters. Lol

Far out that is amazing! And those three women are actually maiden, mother and ‘crone’ although that word is not so lovely 😏 and really fits with what I’m writing. And yep, I’m always the outsider.

Use matriarch or matron. As crone is unfortunately archaic. Although crone sounds not nice, the meaning is actually quite liberating as the crone is over the crap of pretty things and is happy to be free to do and say as she pleases, the wisdom of age liberated from the whole “am I not pretty enough?” Mentality that women often feel constrained by…
But i like poetry and so I like harmonious sounds. Thus my own mmm website. Hehe.

Christine – thanks so much for linking to my website. I am honored that my posts inspire you in some way! Makes my day – since I’ve never been ashamed that my life is lived in the hopes of inspiring others – albeit on a much smaller scale than David Rudolf. Strong female characters – may we read them, write them, and be them!

As I get older I realize more and more how important it is to surround yourself with people who will support you and have your back as I don’t have the energy to have drama filled relationships anymore. Great post!
